... obtain birth/death records from the state of Kansas from 1911 to the present?

The Johnson County Archives & Records Management Department does not have any birth or death records. Birth and death records for Johnson County, Kansas do not exist before 1911. Newspaper obituaries can be researched for death notices from the late 1800’s through the early 1900’s. The Johnson County Archives & Records Management Department holdings include microfilmed copies of newspapers of various Johnson County cities from this period.

The Bureau of Vital Statistics in Topeka, Kansas has birth and death records dating from July 1911. Contact the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Office of Vital Statistics at (785) 296-1400. The office is located in Suite 120, Curtis State Office Building, 1000 SW Jackson, Topeka, Kansas, 66612-2221. The building is southeast of the Capitol building.

Kansas fees for certified copies are $11 for the first certified copy of birth, marriage, and divorce certificates and $6 for each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time. The current fee for certified copies of death certificates is $12 for the first certified copy and $7 for each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time. Divorce records after 1939 are on file in the office of the Clerk of the District Court in which the case was handled. The Johnson County Clerk of the District Court is located in the Johnson County Courthouse, Olathe, Kansas 66061. Telephone 913-715-3487.

The Office of Vital Statistics also has divorce records after July 1, 1951. They may be obtained at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Topeka, Kansas 66620. (785) 296-1400.

The Johnson County Archives & Records Management Department has in its collection will records from 1859 – 1968. Photocopies of original documents are available along with copies of documents on microfilm.

The Probate Division of the Johnson County District Court handles matters related to probate cases.
