The Johnson County Archives and Records Management Program was established in 1990 under a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. In 1992 it achieved permanent status as a department of the Johnson County government.

bldgThe program, which combines both records management and archival functions, is ideally situated to assess the historical significance of documents created by the county government and insure the permanent preservation of those of historic importance. At the same time, the program also fulfills an operational need by providing systematic and cost efficient storage, retention, and disposition of documents having only limited value.

The scope of the collection is limited to documents of enduring historical value created by or related to the departments of the Johnson County government. These records begin with the inception of the county in 1857 and include official records, publications, and other documents created during the course of official business. There are also a limited number of photographs that were received as integral parts of the official records.

bldgThe Johnson County Archives had, since 1992, been located in the Johnson County Administration Building at 111 South Cherry Street on the square in Olathe, Kansas. The Johnson County Archives re-located, in 2007, to a new archives & records center located in the Johnson County Operations Center Building at 19310 West 159th Street in Olathe, Kansas. Located approximately three and a half miles south of downtown Olathe, the Archives operates out of Suite 1100. Parking is available in a parking lot located to the south of the building on 19310 West 159th Street. Research hours are from 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Staff telephone numbers are:

> Steven W. Rogers, Director – (913) 715-0402
> Gina M. Hoch, Archivist – (913) 715-0401
> Lisa A. Stow, Archivist Technician – (913) 715-0400

A reference library concentrating on local history and genealogical reference books is maintained in the research room. Books are not available for circulation but may be used in the research room during normal business hours. General inquiries should be directed to (913) 715-0400.
