There are no birth or death records contained in our holdings. The Bureau of
Vital Statistics has birth and death records beginning on 7/1/1911 for all
counties.
Prior to that date it was the responsibility of the individual county to keep
these records and unfortunately we have been unable to find those for Johnson
County, Kansas. The only possible sources available for proof of birth or death
prior to that date are newspapers, church records, or surviving records of undertakers
or cemeteries. Those created since 7/1/1911 may be obtained at the Kansas Department
of Health and Environment, Bureau of Vital Statistics, Topeka, Kansas 66620.

Divorce records after 1939 are on file in the office of the Clerk of the District
Court in which the case was handled. The Johnson County Clerk of the District
Court is located in the Johnson County Courthouse, Olathe, Kansas 66061. Telephone
913-715-3487. See "District Court Civil Cases" shown on the "Collections" page
of our website for information on the steps required for accessing Divorce Records
that have been turned over to the Archives.
The Office of Vital Statistics also has divorce records after July 1, 1951. They
may be obtained at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Bureau of
Vital Statistics, Topeka, Kansas 66620. 785-296-1400.

As outlined in K. S. A. 45-215-216, the existing policy of this
state is that all public records shall be open for inspection by any person.
Should a member of the public request access to records that are being stored
for a department, they will be placed in contact with the department of origin.
Permission by the department or origin will be required before granting access.
Once this access has been granted by the department of origin, the Records Management
program will allow the use of the records within their supervised research area
in the same manner as provided to Archives researchers.
